Why do people chew gum?

If an anthropologist from Mars ever visited a typical supermarket, they’d be confounded by those shelves near the checkout aisle that display dozens of flavored gum options. Chewing without eating seems like such a ridiculous habit, the oral equivalent of running on a treadmill. And yet, people have been chewing gum for thousands of years, ever since the ancient Greeks began popping wads of mastic tree resin in their mouth to sweeten the breath. Socrates probably chewed gum.

It turns out there’s an excellent rationale for this long-standing cultural habit: Gum is an effective booster of mental performance, conferring all sorts of benefits without any side effects.

While previous studies achieved similar results — chewing gum is often a better test aid than caffeine — this latest research investigated the time course of the gum advantage. It turns out to be rather short lived, as gum chewers only showed an increase in performance during the first 20 minutes of testing. After that, they performed identically to non-chewers.

What’s responsible for this mental boost? Nobody really knows. It doesn’t appear to depend on glucose, since sugar-free gum generated the same benefits. Instead, the researchers propose that gum enhances performance due to “mastication-induced arousal.” The act of chewing, in other words, wakes us up, ensuring that we are fully focused on the task at hand. Unfortunately, this boost is fleeting. The takeaway of this research is straightforward: When taking a test, save the gum for the hardest part, or for those questions when you feel your focus flagging. The gum will help you concentrate, but the help won’t last long.

Last month, scientists at Coventry University found that people chewing mint gum showed a dramatic decrease in feelings of sleepiness. The subjects also looked less exhausted when assessed with the Pupillographic Sleepiness Test (PST), which uses the oscillations of the pupils as a metric of tiredness. When we chew gum, we gain alertness and attention, but without the jitters.

And then there’s this paper, from a researcher at Cardiff University. 133 volunteers were given cognitive tests with and without chewing gum. After each testing session, the volunteers rated their mood and underwent a number of physiological measurements, including heart rate and salivary cortisol levels. As expected, gum chewers were more attentive than non-chewers, with elevated heart rates and cortisol levels. They also had much faster reaction times, especially on more difficult reaction tests. They even appeared to be in a better mood.

A recent review of the gum-chewing literature summarizes the science: “Gum appears to be a functional food with function but no food.”

We’ve gotten used to animals having strange powers — like using sound to create ‘vision,’ seeing more colors than we do, and sensing polarized light or the magnetic field of the earth. But did you know that some animals have ‘powers’ over human physiology? The Russell’s Pit Viper can use its venom to send you back through puberty.

The Russell’s Pit Viper spends its days crawling through Southeast Asia, eating small rodents, and giving people yet another reason to fear snakes. Not because they kill thousands of people every year. That’s unpleasant, but we already knew that about most snake bites. No, this is a snake that screws with you even if you survive the bite. The mechanism of its particular brand of lasting torment lies in the effects of the bite itself. Often the bite takes out the ability of the blood to clot or coagulate anywhere. This destroys the kidneys, with kidney failure often claiming the lives of people who survive the initial bite, and hemorrhaging throughout the body. ‘Throughout the body’ includes the pituitary gland.

Although the pituitary gland is the star in puberty, it continues to play a supporting role throughout a person’s life. Damage or sufficient amount of blood loss can cause the gland to cease production of necessary hormones. The extent of damage of any snakebite depends on several factors, including how fast an antivenin is applied, but Russell’s Viper victims often have significant damage to the gland. In a study published in The Lancet, about twenty-nine percent of patients who recovered from Russell’s Viper venom had signs of hypopituitarism or Sheehan’s Syndrome. Both conditions have unremarkable symptoms, like a constant feeling of cold and an unusual amount of fatigue. What distinguishes them is a sort of reverse-puberty in adults. They lose their sex drive. They lose fertility. They lose their body hair, especially pubic hair. Men lose facial hair and muscles. Women lose curves as the condition causes them to lose weight. Some doctors even report loss of mental faculties as the condition progresses.

Doctors have success in treating viper victims with replacement hormones, but that doesn’t take away this odd, and entirely scientific power. In science fiction and fantasy fiction, people often run across creatures that can do crazy things like eating souls, mesmerizing minds, and animating dead bodies. It’s strange to think that, across our own world, crawl creatures with the ability to send our bodies, in everything but height, back to childhood with a bite. If you read that in a science fiction story, would you ever believe it could happen?

A massive solar eruption may lead to the strongest radiation storm in seven years

Last week, a swelling solar storm on the surface of the Sun sent a stream of charged particles hurtling toward Earth, making for beautiful northern lights in the planet’s extreme latitudes. But late last night, at 10:59 p.m. EST, the now massive tempest unleashed an eruption that scientists expect will be responsible for Earth’s largest solar radiation storm since 2005.

How powerful are we talking? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that many plane flights scheduled for tomorrow can expect to be re-routed within the next few hours.

Cause for concern is due to the M9-class solar flare that was observed lashing out last night from a large sunspot — dubbed “1402” — on the Sun’s northeastern hemisphere. The image you see up top reveals the extreme flash of ultraviolet radiation that was emitted by the sunspot, as captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory [Click here for a mesmerizing hi-res version].

The explosion’s M9-ranking puts it just below the threshold of an X-flare, the most powerful classification of solar eruption there is. It’s important to understand that while flares more violent than 1402’s are often observed on the surface of the Sun, it’s rare for one so powerful to eject subatomic particles in a wave aimed so directly at Earth; analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab have released an animated forecast track [click through to see], which shows the leading edge of the particle ejection reaching Earth tomorrow morning, shortly after 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT).

SpaceWeather.com reports the particles emitted by last night’s solar flare could “cause isolated reboots of computers onboard Earth-orbiting satellites and interfere with polar radio communications.” According to Kathy Sullivan, deputy administrator of NOAA, polar flights scheduled for tomorrow here on Earth are expected to be re-routed within the next few hours, so as to avoid any complications caused by the storm’s arrival.

Jan. 21, 1979: Neptune Moves Outside Pluto’s Wacky Orbit

1979: Neptune begins a 20-year run as the outermost planet in the solar system as Pluto’s elliptical orbit carries it closer in to the sun.

While its eccentric orbit around the sun is not among the reasons the International Astronomical Union gave for downgrading Pluto’s status to “dwarf planet” in 2006, it probably didn’t help. Not only is Pluto’s orbit elliptical, which puts it at odds with the circular orbits of the great eight, but its orbital plane is also very different.

The effect of Pluto’s orbit takes it inside of Neptune’s at its perihelion, or closest distance to the sun, which is roughly 2.7 billion miles. It takes 20 years for the two orbits to cross again.

Neptune passed back inside Pluto’s orbit in 1999.

It’s not a phenomenon any of us will witness again unless Ray Kurzweil gets his way and we all live to be 500 years old. Pluto’s orbit carries it inside Neptune’s every 248 years, so unless you’re planning to hang around until 2247, you’ll miss it.

The Wreck of the Costa Concordia

On the night of Friday, January 13, the luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia, with more than 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members on board, struck a reef, keeled over, and partially sank off Isola del Giglio, Italy. Six people are now confirmed dead, including two French passengers and one Peruvian crew member, apparently after jumping into the chilly Mediterranean waters after the wreck. Fourteen more people still remain missing, as search and rescue teams continue their efforts to find survivors. The incident occurred only hours into the cruise, and passengers had not yet undergone any lifeboat drills — that plus the severe list of the ship made evacuation chaotic and frightening. Captain Francesco Schettino has been arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship. Gathered here are images of the Costa Concordia, as efforts are still underway to find the fourteen passengers that remain missing.
